KPMG Chicago’s Hiring Picking Up (Just Not for Auditors)

Claire Bushey reports in Crain’s that KPMG Chicago plans to hire 500 people over the next 3 years after hiring 500 people over the past 5. In my vivid imagination, Rahm Emanuel told them, “Quit fucking sandbagging.”

In any case, the House of Klynveld’s growth doesn’t match a couple of its local Big 4 peers:

Despite the expansion, the firm’s growth in the Chicago market has lagged behind that of competitors PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young, according to Crain’s data. The number of local professionals has increased 27 percent at both KPMG and Deloitte since 2012. At PwC and EY, the spike is nearly double: 50 percent and 52 percent, respectively.

Full disclosure — I used to work at KPMG and it lagged behind PwC and EY then, too.

What’s also remarkable is who KPMG is hiring. Bushey writes, “The firm has 44 percent more consultants locally than it did in 2012, compared to a 17 percent increase in tax professionals and a 5 percent drop in auditors.”

Now that you know where the firm’s priorities are, adjust your careers accordingly.
