Important Observations to Make When Interviewing

Often, when you’re interviewing you feel a little like a bug under a microscope. Someone is watching everything you do and assessing everything you say. Did you wear the right thing? Are you smiling enough? Your interviewers are looking for clues about who you are and whether you’ll be a good fit for the firm. […]

The Best Line of BS I Ever Heard During My Time in Public Accounting

Accountants’ Résumés Are the Worst

My name is John, I’m a recruiter and I have a résumé problem. I see lots of résumés from accountants. Less than a third are presentable. When the perfect candidate has a résumé that fails, I get cranky and I call to suggest a fix. Hiring managers don’t do that. Where to start? Résumé experts […]

How to Develop Consistency as a Skill

It’s sometimes hard to get noticed when you are at a firm. Certainly, much depends on firm culture, but that’s not all of it. Being a Great Place to Work During Busy Season Means More Than a Free Slice of Pizza

Back when I was a tax associate, my colleagues and I would watch the Hoops and Yoyo “It’s Sarcastic Wednesday.” The part that cracked me up the most was when they say, “I’ll do large amounts of free work for a slice of pepperoni!” But why is it so funny (but not really funny at the same time)?

For Once, a Burned Out Auditor Wrote an Honest Answer to a Stupid Question

A large part of any accountant’s job is to write boring answers to boring questions. Most people meet an accountant and think, “Oh, you’re good with numbers,” and while that’s a safe assumption, what really lurks underneath is a masterful chronicler of complex rules in the most banal language possible.
